Vignir Jóhannsson
Det har sat sit præg på hvordan hans forskellige oplevelser overføres til kunstværker i forskellige materialer og platforme
Has been a professional artist since he graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design (MFA from RISD) in the USA. He has primarily worked with expressionist expression in many different materials.
In his career, he has held many solo exhibitions, made senographies for TV and films, produced art in glass and participated in large glass exhibitions around the world.
Paintings have been the common thread in Vignir’s expression throughout time with different themes and styles ranging from the ultra-expressionistic to the minimalistic. Landscapes and theoretical concepts are what he has been most interested in. Abstract theories about the movement of time itself mixed with human relationships and instinctive physical reactions to emotions.
In his sculptures and installations, he has primarily focused on lines, shapes and light fall together with reflections of light and colors. The same concepts are consistent in his scenography (for television and theater) and exhibition projects.
Vignir was born and raised in a small fishing village in Iceland where he got his great visual impressions of nature, the sea and the great changes in the weather. This has left its mark on how his different experiences are transferred to artworks in different materials and platforms
After he finished his BA education from the Academy of Fine Arts in Iceland (Myndlista and Handídaskoli Islands) in 1978, he moved to the USA and attended the Rhode Island School Of Design in Providence RI in 1981. After graduating he lived for a few years in Brooklyn NY and later for quite a few years in Santa Fe New Mexico. He then moved back to Iceland in 1995 and was in his home country until he moved to Denmark in 2011 where he lives now.
